Web/Mobile App Critique

Yelp.. the reason I love this app is for the instant access to food spots around me. You can look up a restaurant’s address, hours of operation, menu, pictures of food and reviews from other people who have eaten at this restaurant. You can book reservations or order take out through the app and leave your own review. Even though the food search is the main reason I use Yelp, the app gives you many options to search for. You can search for anything from restaurants to auto repair, home cleaning, moving services, and plumbing. If you scroll down to the bottom of the search page, you can find a section that suggests highly rated places near you. The projects page displays any projects you’ve posted on Yelp, where you were looking for service. The page also displays a list of businesses in your area, related to whatever task you are seeking. The next page is called Me. This is your profile page. You can check in to a location through Yelp, which posts on your social media page; letting your friends know where you are. There’s also options to add a review and add photos. There’s a notification bell at the top right of the app to display any notifications you receive. Next to the notification bell is the share option, to share your profile with anyone you want. Scrolling down the page shows statistics of your usage on the app, it will display recent searches, recent places visited, reviews left, photos posted, to name a few features. The collections page shows lists of businesses that are suggested to you or ones that you have created by bookmarking your favorite places. The more page shows other options like having quick access to other pages, showing food orders, etc.
Even though I enjoy a lot of features on the Yelp app, there are some things that I feel could be approved upon. One thing I think can be tweaked is the more page on the app. I think it has a lot of information on there is unnecessary. There’s already a bookmark page, there doesn’t need to be another link to the bookmark page on the more page. I feel like it is too cluttered and can be cleaned up a bit. The second thing I didn’t like about the app was the lack of access to businesses abroad. I travel a lot and this app has definitely helped me, when it came to finding highly rated restaurants, but the access that Yelp has over there does not compare to their access in the U.S. If you do find the businesses on Yelp, there aren’t many reviews because the locals don't use Yelp. If Yelp can somehow gain more access to businesses abroad, that would improve it greatly. The last thing I think can be improved upon is when looking for the menu of a restaurant, it will take you to pictures of old menus, instead of the website with the current menu. It’s not a deal breaker, but a bit of an annoyance.
The app, overall, is extremely easy to use. It is very responsive and I can’t remember experiencing many bugs while using it. Yelp is free to sign up and you can search for businesses on there without creating a profile. However, if you want access to the other features mentioned above, you will have to create a profile.
