Tech Topic Connection

Applications , specifically mobile applications are used everyday for practically everything. A mobile app is, " a computer program designed to run on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers ,” (Autili, M., Malavolta, I., Perucci, A. et al., 2021). Mobile apps were originally created to find information or for productivity purposes. Long gone are the days of going to the library to find a book to use for research, having to wait for a show to broadcast on TV at its allotted time, or having to listen to the radio to hear a song. Now, users can use mobile apps for everything from, streaming movies and tv shows on demand, finding an article to reference or read from your mobile devices, and listen to any song at any time. These days, “ the digital media usage time is driven by mobile devices, with smartphone and tablets accounting for 66% of all time spent, against desktop usage which accounts for 34%. Specifically, more than 80% of mobile minutes in all markets are...

Network Security

Information and system security on the internet affect individual users and corporations in different ways. In recent years, users have been sharing more information about themselves on the internet, in posts, which are viewed by others on the internet. Users should be careful about what posts are shared about themselves because that information can be used negatively against them. User information is valuable for several reasons. Once user information is shared online, it is susceptible to being judged by others. The posts users share online aren’t the only valuable information associated with users. Users can leave electronic footprints which consists of, “ all of the information that user posts, or other posts about the user, hidden data attached to those posts by the services used, the record of the user’s online activities, and inferences that can be put together based off of the information collected ,” (Vahid, F., & Lysecky, S. 2019). User information can be valuable to ...

Computers in the Workplace

I work at T-mobile . Previously, I was with Sprint and switched over when T-mobile bought out Sprint . The change of technology was significant, just from switching from Sprint to T-mobile . With Sprint , we were using desktop computers, with registers underneath, and older card readers, that did not have Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or the tap function. When we moved over to T-mobile after the merger, the desktop computers were gone for the most part. T-mobile only kept one to access Sprint accounts, but all T-mobile sales are done on an iPad with a portable, handheld, card reader that accepts card, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and the tap function. The T-mobile system is much more intuitive and being that its an iPad, everything we need can be found in the apps. It was important for the Sprint / T-mobile reps to learn the T-mobile system quickly, because it was completely different than Sprint . The company wanted to catch these new reps up to the level of the existing T-mobile reps...

Traveling Through the Network

A computer wants to send a packet to a certain location. A packet is first sent to a DNS server to look up the IP address. A packet contains all kinds of information like an address for a destination computer, different types of data and its sizes. Packets travel over communication links like cable wires, fiber optic cables, and wireless satellite communications. Packets travel through other computers, on its way to its destination. If routes are congested, packets may take different routes to get to a location.       For my ping to Google, I added a counter to 4 in my ping results, which shows that 4 packets were sent out and 4 were received. Pinging Google shows me the average time it took to communicate with the domain, which was 16.670 ms.       The trace route for Google showed me the routes it took to get to that domain. It looks like the packets went through a few frontier routers before getting to the final location.   ...

Programming Languages

Learning programming languages is becoming an essential part of education. With learning these different languages, it is important to understand what they are, how they function and when they can be applied to real world scenarios. As someone who is seeking a career in software engineering, I think these tools are a great foundation to learning how to build programs.          This was my first time using   Scratch . I’ve never even heard of this website before. Initially, I watched the tutorial videos to get an idea of how Scratch worked. I also did the activities in the textbook as I read though the sections. To my surprise, those activities gave me a better understanding of programming. The activities focused on machine language , assembly language and high-level languages , like Python .       Machine language is the instructions given to the CPU, for it to perform a task. These instructions are given in 0’s and 1’s bec...

Web/Mobile App Critique

Yelp .. the reason I love this app is for the instant access to food spots around me. You can look up a restaurant’s address, hours of operation, menu, pictures of food and reviews from other people who have eaten at this restaurant. You can book reservations or order take out through the app and leave your own review. Even though the food search is the main reason I use Yelp , the app gives you many options to search for. You can search for anything from restaurants to auto repair, home cleaning, moving services, and plumbing. If you scroll down to the bottom of the search page, you can find a section that suggests highly rated places near you. The projects page displays any projects you’ve posted on Yelp , where you were looking for service. The page also displays a list of businesses in your area, related to whatever task you are seeking. The next page is called Me . This is your   profile page . You can check in to a location through Yelp , which posts on your social ...

Documenting a Day

When creating a full portfolio of information, it is important to use visuals, numbers and words. There are several types of applications that handle this job quite well. Word processor applications , spreadsheet applications and presentation applications . Each one does a specific job, but used all together can create a total package for any type of presentation.      A word processor is,  “ a common computer application for creating formatted text ,” (Vahid, F., & Lysecky, S. 2019). The word application that I used was Pages . I have a MacBook, so Microsoft Office doesn’t come installed on it. It does come with Pages , which is the Apple equivalent of Microsoft Word . It has all of the same features, just in a different layout. I can format text, changing the font , size and add additional features, like making the text bold or italicized . What I liked about using Pages was being able to quickly write down my thoughts, even while on the go. Page...
